There is yet another way how to achieve significant savings in buildings than through the heating/cooling or changing the building envelope.
1 The first step is the replacement of existing lights by more economical ones (if it has not already been done before). Current technology allows us to install lights with significantly lower power input while keeping the same level of illumination and complying with health standards. However, it is a one-shot saving with longer payback and higher initial investment – it is a similar case to the reconstruction of the building envelope from the savings of heating energy point of view. Anyway, this step is necessary, but without the subsequent one, it exploits only a part of the potential savings.
2 The second step is the installation of advanced lighting control. Standard lighting control is just the on/off switching. Very often, it depends only on the user's responsibility, whether the operation is economic or not. Therefore, despite of the quality of lights, the economic operation can not be gueranteed. The only advanced control can take the full advantage of the savings potential - as in the case of advanced control of heating/cooling. The important feature of lights is their electronics – when having an attribute „smart“ (for example, using DALI communication protocol), to implement an advanced control of the entire lighting system is very easy.

There are several ways to achieve savings - from the simplest measure such as checking of the forgotten shining lights to the most fundamental such as feedback control of lights using the illumination level sensor. A natural day-light is utilized during the day what enables to dimm the lights and save.
Smart lights can be also used for definition of the so-called lighting scenes, what is beneficial e.g. for night watch. The guard then does not need to light up the entire space, but only a few selected lights forming his route. Modern control system also allows a remote surveillance, control and monitoring of system status via online visualization and management then can have a direct overview of the energy consumed by lights. In the case of the bus DALI, lights can even „ask“ themselves for replacement tube or can inform about a failure.
